Film Series Highlights the Latino American Experience

The Dayton Human Relations Council is partnering with the University of Dayton to present a film series on the Latino American experience. Admission to the following films, all shown on the University of Dayton campus, is free:

“¡Viva Baseball!”
Wednesday, Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., Roesch Library Collab
A documentary about the history and struggles of Latino baseball players, hosted by Tom Nichols, Dayton Dragons director of media relations and broadcasting.

“Latino Americans Episode 6: Peril and Promise (1980-2000)”
Tuesday, Sept. 29, 7:00 p.m., Sears Recital Hall
A scholar-led screening of episode 6 of the PBS Series “Latino Americans: Peril and Promise.” Explores the second wave of Cubans arriving in Miami during the Mariel exodus, as well as hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans fleeing civil wars. Discussion and screening facilitated by Tereza Szeghi.

“Under the Same Moon”
Wednesday, Sept. 30, 6:30 p.m., Roesch Library Collab
A fictional story of a mother and son crossing the border illegally into the U.S., years apart. Hosted by Sr. Maria Stacy, director of Hispanic Catholic Ministry, North.

“From Mambo to Hip Hop”
Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6:30 p.m., Roesch Library Collab
A documentary about music of the South Bronx, beginning with the Puerto Rican migration and the adoption of Cuban rhythms to create the New York salsa sound.

Parking:  Use the main campus entrance (Stewart Street, just east of Brown Street) and follow the signs to visitor parking. An attendant will issue a parking pass.

The film series is part of “Latino Americans: 500 Years of History,” a special program of public events scheduled for September through March. The program is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
